Winter Itch – All About Balance
The condition is quite common due to the changing seasons and life would be better if it is dealt with well before the cold takes hold. Moisture, or the lack of it is the culprit and skin health is determined by a balance between moisture, elasticity and acidity, all of which is needed for healthy skin not only during the cold winter months but all year round so we maintain healthy skin all the time. Hot water, though it feels soothing tends to leach out natural oils the skin produces to lubricate itself, coupled with harsh soaps we use and love, they can indeed disrupt the natural balance of skin leading to itch.
Moisturizers should be used as frequent as possible to help maintain the moisture levels and lock them within the skin’s layers. As we put on warm clothing, we sweat making it comfortable yet sweat tends to stay onto the clothes so breathable undergarments to keep the sweat out of your skin. That sweat can host bacteria and other irritants, getting them stuck onto the skin or clothing. Humidity is also a factor to consider, for cold weather tends to dry out the air too much so all year round, a proper balance of humidity should be maintained, humidifiers when the air is dry and de-humidifyers when it’s too wet.
